Its been a year of ups and downs for Bounty Killer, with this latest incident being well on the downside. Most of my Jamaican friends will know that Bounty Killer is no stranger to assault charges or violence and this latest drama sees him arrested by the police after a female companion turned up at the Constant Spring Police Station bleeding and badly bruised, and reported that he had assaulted her with a hammer. Since then a series of songs have been released about this incident with the most popular being titled 'lick her wid di hammer'.
Violence and abuse are used for one main purpose: to gain and maintain total control. An abuser doesn’t "play fair" and while the physical injury may be the most obvious danger, the emotional and psychological consequences of abuse are also severe. In Jamaica and many parts of the world it is all too often the men, not exclusively, but usually the men, who engage in physical and/or emotionally abusive behaviour in their day to day living or relationships. It happens, I know...and it's wrong. Ask the victim and they will tell you what you should already know. You are destroying self-worth, causing anxiety and depression, and making a person feel helpless and alone. And for what?...why?...are you thinking that it's because of provocation?.. economic hardship, family dysfunction?..or maybe the truth is that you have poor communication skills - you can't get out of you what you feel in order to be understood, so you get frustrated and all worked up then BAM! you explode. Well, it's got to stop. Maybe it's a lack of spirituality and a healthy fear of God that should be the starting point. Maybe it's a good kicking yourself that you need in order to....no...stop right there. God said if we live by the 'eye for an eye' rule soon no-one will have an eye left....let's make some right moves today and start looking inward on our thoughts and actions,..start moving forward towards harmony by controlling ourself first. It's a rocky road out there, so walk good mi brother. One love.
